On September 27, 2018, our second meeting of the VDI Systems Engineering Working Group took place. This time, the focus of the event was "Model-Based Systems Engineering" (MBSE). The large number of participants from a wide range of companies and industries demonstrated that this topic is of interest to many.
In his presentation, Jan Vollmar (Siemens AG) presented a field report on the implementation of MBSE at Siemens. This was based on an internal survey. The resulting statistics demonstrated both the strengths of MBSE and the key points to consider when implementing MBSE in a company. It becomes clear that simply implementing a tool or modeling language is not a suitable approach. The implementation of MBSE requires a much more holistic approach. This also includes processes, employee skills, and the exchange of information about MBSE within the organization.

In my presentation, I first presented the theoretical foundations of MBSE to engage all participants. I then demonstrated the practical application of MBSE and its advantages using a real-life project. The participants saw how an embedded system can be modeled using the Enterprise Architect tool. Starting with use cases and requirements, through various architectural representations, the participants were able to understand the otherwise abstract discussions about MBSE using a real-life application example. I was able to discuss many of the advantages of MBSE, such as traceability, the ability to ask questions of the model, and using the model as a specification from which documentation is then automatically generated.

The participants
We were delighted to see new faces again this time. With 22 participants, the event was well attended, and our survey revealed a good cross-section of attendees.

What happens next?
We plan to hold the next Systems Engineering workshop in Erlangen on November 29, 2018. Please mark this date in your calendar now. We will, of course, provide more detailed information as usual via the blog, our newsletter, Xing, and other channels.
Best regards
Goran Madzar
